So at last the biggest secret is out. The way of the ninja is based on simple things that are accessible to everyone. Never mind about walking on the water (no, it's not that difficult) or climbing the wall of a building with no ledges (a bit more difficult), what we are talking about here are the everyday self defense techniques that the ninja had the good sense to invent and to practice.

Some of these techniques are so simple, yet so effective, that you can understand why people felt the need to dress them up and make them into something secret and supernatural. After all, what does Hollywood base its revenues on? So here is a selection of some of the key guiding principles and techniques from the ninja that hold good to this day.

To start with in self defense, avoid having to use it if you can. Meaning, look ahead and avoid unhealthy situations if you can see them coming. Cross the street if you are on foot and you see a group of aggressive people in front of you, or avoid badly lit and lonely areas. The ninjas were good business people. If they could accomplish their objectives with a minimum of effort, that was fine. Fighting face to face was really only if necessary.

Leading on from avoiding confrontation if it did not suit them, the ninja would also move out of the way of an enemy and hide in the long grass until the enemy had gone past and turned their back on the ninja. So your next secret ninja technique is to hide, either to avoid or to escape an attack after running away (which is your additional bonus secret technique, much favored by the ninja when fighting was not in the plan).

Here's one to finish with. It's based on the ninja art of generating confusion. They used it as a secret technique to prepare for attack, but you would use it as a way of ending one, preferably with no harm to yourself. Where the ninjas would set fire to things for this, you simply yell and scream. It's calculated to confuse the attacker who suddenly wonders if you are really worth the trouble and possibility of someone coming to your assistance. It doesn't matter too much what you scream, although "Fire!" is a good way getting help from other people who wouldn't be so keen if you shouted "Murder!".

So to sum up, starting the ninja secret techniques your way for self defense goes like this. Avoid, hide, run, scream. OK?
